The Benefits of Building a New House

Building a new house can be one of the most satisfying activities a future homeowner can undertake. But it can also be very stressful. That is why some people opt to buy an existing property or choose to live in a condominium or an apartment instead.

The difference between building your dream house and a "haunted house" has a lot to do with determining that building a house is the best option for you.

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of building a house:

  • A new house is built according to your wants and needs so it’s generally more expensive than a buying a used house.
  • Building a new house can be more personally satisfying if you take an active role in the building process and work closely with the architect and the construction team. It’s also more complicated because it involves several steps, like preparing the financing, finding a lot, screening and hiring a builder, etc.
  • All the components of the new house are of course, new, and most of the components feature the latest house design and construction trends.
  • You should expect some delays during the design and construction process.
  • New houses are generally built in areas of expansion rather than of decline.
  • Buying a ready-made house or a used house doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re saving money; it will probably give you additional costs, like landscaping, window treatments and interior decorations once you move in.

When it comes to new houses, there is no such thing as “one plan fits all.” Whether you decide to build a house from scratch or buy a new one, you still have to make a number of choices.

  • Buying a new, ready-built house or one that is currently under construction
  • Building your new house in a subdivision where a home builder can give you a choice of plans.
  • Building a house after choosing a stock plan of your choice and buying a lot
  • Hiring an architect and building a customized house
  • Finding contractors

Unless you are buying a newly-constructed house in a subdivision, you will most likely need to select and hire an architect and a contractor.

Choose wisely. You’ll be entrusting the task of building your dream house into their hands.
