20 Questions for Your Architect
In the client-architect relationship, the future homeowner’s wish is the architect’s command. Your comfort and convenience, along with your budget and design goals, should be every architect’s highest priority.
In the process of interviewing prospective architects to handle your residential construction project, they should be able to provide detailed answers to these 20 questions:
- What are the important issues or considerations in your project? Are there any foreseen challenges?
- How will he/she approach your project?
- What is his/her design philosophy?
- What sets him/her apart from the rest?
- How will he/she gather information about your needs, goals, etc.?
- What will he/she show you along the way to explain the project? Will you see drawings or sketches?

- How will he/she determine the priorities and make decisions?
- Who from the architecture firm will be dealing with you directly? Is the principal architect involved? Is it the same person who will be designing your project?
- How interested or enthusiastic is the architect in this project?
- How busy is the architect?
- What are the steps to be undertaken in the design process?
- How does the architect organize the process?
- What does the architect expect you to provide?
- How experienced is the architect in terms of cost estimating?
- What services does the architect provide during construction?
- How long will it take for the architect to design and build your home? How disruptive will the construction be?
- How does the architect establish fees?
- How much would the architect charge you for this project?
- Along the way, if the scopes of the project changes, how are the additional fee determined?
- Do you have a list of past clients that the architect has worked with?
